Caring For Your Hair Properly: 12 Tips For Simple & Healthy Hair Care
1. Wash Your Hair Properly: Less Is More
To permanently escape the vicious circle of greasy hair, you should wean your hair from washing it too much. To do this, you should extend your usual hair washing rhythm step by step by avoiding washing your hair for one day longer than usual. This allows your hair to “grease out” and sebum production regulates itself. Yes, it takes a lot of effort, but your hair will thank you for it.
2. Use Mild Shampoo Without Silicones
There is a huge selection of hair shampoos in the drugstore. But not everyone cleans and cares for their hair in the best possible way. The wrong care products can even damage your hair.
Your hair care shampoo should have the following features:
- Mild surfactants: Surfactants are responsible for reliably cleaning the hair and scalp of grease and dirt particles, but can irritate the scalp at the same time. If a shampoo contains extra mild surfactants, it cleans reliably and protects your skin at the same time.
- Without silicones and parabens: Avoid shampoo with artificial additives such as silicones and parabens. These are deposited on the surface of the hair and in the long term ensure that care substances can no longer penetrate the inside of the hair.
When washing your hair, a hazelnut-sized portion of shampoo per wash is sufficient. Lather the shampoo, distribute it through your hair and massage it lightly into the scalp. Then wash it thoroughly.
3. Don't Shower Too Hot
As pleasant as a hot shower can be for your well-being, water that is too hot is not a good idea for your hair. The problem: The high water temperatures dry out your hair and make it brittle. It is better to wash your hair with lukewarm water to protect the valuable cuticle layer of your hair.
Are you already suffering from brittle hair? In my guide for “Dry Hair” I explain everything about the causes and show you which home remedies and care tips you can use to restore your hair to health.
4. Do Not Rub Your Hair Dry
Especially when wet or damp, your hair is very sensitive and breaks more easily. For this reason, you should not vigorously rub your hair dry after showering, but rather gently dab it with a towel.
5. Comb Your Hair Instead Of Brushing It
When wet, gently detangle your hair with a wide-toothed comb instead of using a brush. This protects your hair structure! Leave-in conditioners or detangling sprays also make your hair easier to comb.
6. Blow Dry Your Hair Properly
Before blow-drying, you should let your hair air dry for about 15 minutes. This closes the outer cuticle and makes the hair less vulnerable. Set your blow dryer to the lowest to medium temperature and a high fan speed to dry your hair. Keep the hairdryer at least 20 centimeters away from your head.
If you have fine hair, I recommend that you turn down the fan speed. Otherwise your hair will get tangled quickly. Blow-dry your hair systematically: Pin the top layer of hair up with hair clips and blow-dry your hair from below, strand by strand. Blow dry the strands themselves from root to tip.
7. Start A Pampering Program With Conditioner & Hair Serum
If you want to care for your hair properly, you should also pamper it! There are numerous care products for this. But what is the difference between conditioner, hair serum and the like? I'll explain it to you:
- Conditioner: This care product increases the ease of combing, softness and shine of your hair and prevents it from becoming matted. You should use a conditioner after every hair wash. When choosing a product, make sure that it does not contain any harmful substances such as parabens or silicones.
- Important: Always rinse your hair well after use. If residue from the conditioner remains in your hair, it will become greasy more quickly.
- Treatment: A nourishing hair treatment penetrates the hair and provides moisture. You should use them about every two weeks after regular hair washing.
- Hair serum / hair tonic: A hair serum is intensive care for your hair. It is massaged into the damp or dry scalp after washing your hair. The active ingredients ensure more moisture, protection of the hair structure and a healthier scalp.
8. Avoid 2-In-1 Products
Some hair care products advertise that they are a shampoo and conditioner in one. But be careful: both products have different tasks. While shampoo is intended to clean your hair of dirt with mild surfactants, the conditioner ensures easy combing and shine. Many 2-in-1 products cannot meet these two requirements.
That's why I recommend you avoid it and instead use selected individual products that properly care for your hair.
9. Have Your Ends Trimmed Regularly
Many women don't like this hair care tip. But even if you would like to let your hair grow as long as possible, a regular visit to the hairdresser is part of proper hair care. This keeps your hair healthy and removes split ends. It is usually sufficient to have the ends of the hair shortened by one to two centimeters every eight to ten weeks.
10. Make Yourself A Braided Hairstyle For The Night
This hair care tip is particularly interesting for women with long hair: To ensure that your hair doesn't get tangled at night, it's worth braiding your hair into a loose braid. This means you don't have to spend hours detangling your hair when you get up, but you can start styling straight away.
11. Provide Extra Care In Summer And Winter
In summer it's the sun or the salt water on a beach holiday, in winter it's the dry heated air and lots of blow-drying - so take extra care of your hair during these times and pamper it with an extra portion of care.
Special hair treatments or care products with integrated UV protection are particularly suitable for intensive care. On hot summer days, you should also avoid exposing your wet hair to direct sun. Otherwise, UV radiation will damage your hair structure and cause it to dry out more quickly.
12. Style Your Hair Mindfully
Sharp-edged metal clips and tight hair ties with metal fasteners destroy the cuticle of your hair and make it easier to break. Therefore, always make sure to use hair clips with a gentle coating or a fabric cover.
Also, don't tie your hair in a ponytail or bun too often. Otherwise the hair is often squeezed in the same place and tying it together puts more strain on the hair roots.
I also recommend that you let your hair dry completely before you start styling your hair. Your hair is particularly sensitive when wet and can break more quickly.
